Kester has dreamed of becoming a knight all his life. Brave and eager to defend Banshire, he believes he understands what duty requires, especially when war with the neighboring kingdom of Aeria grows more dangerous by the day. But when his first great assignment leads him to the blood-soaked ruins of Fort Gabel, the glory of battle gives way to loss, fear, and a truth he never expected to face.
